RESET!! Day 1 (again)

Ain't life funny?  After starting Day 1, I had to go to the ER because of blood clots in my arms caused by IVs from my hospital stay.  Painful, but not dangerous.

Everything is cool, though. My delay gave me the chance to do more reading and I am so excited about starting my 30 day Paleo trial. Here is how I did today on Day 1 (part deux).

Diet: Coffee, with a little Splenda (not Paleo, unfortunately), a hard boiled egg, ham from yesterday's Easter, and strawberries for breakfast.  For lunch, I had ham, squash, and asparagus.  For dinner, salad with snow peas and cucumbers with turkey breast.  I also had a Larabar for a snack, which is all natural. Larabar's are good, but I should lay off them while I am trying to lose weight.

My vital stats for the day:
Weight: 340.2 lbs
Blood sugar: 162 blood sugar (took 50 units of insulin the night before)
Sleep: 8 hours
Exercise: None for today (just felt too tired, I will try tomorrow once my body has become acclimated to this way of eating)

Until tomorrow!

Day 1 - Eating Like a Dinosaur!!!

I seem to post to this blog a few times every year. I hope to do better now that I have something to write about.  Which is???

I've decided to try a paleo diet, which I have been impressed with after reading the The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf, as well as listening to Jimmy Moore's Livin' La Vida Low Carb podcast, and recently reading the Paleo Parents website/blog. Paleo Parents' Matt and Stacy have written the book Eat Like a Dinosaur, which tells a great kid's story and contains Paleo recipes for cooking with the kids. It is also very cool that they live in Fairfax, Virginia, where I work. They have organized a Meet-Up group, which I have joined. I look forward to meeting them.

So, what is a Paleo diet?  Essentially it is low-carb, although vegtables and fruits are a large part of what you eat. Grains and dairy are not part of the diet, which I'm mostly cool about. Cheese is going to be difficult to give up, but I have found that cheese has slowed my weight loss in the past.  Oh well...so long cheese!

I'm also exploring eating grass feed meats, Omega-3 eggs, and locally grown vegetables.  Through Paleo Parents, I've learned of the Mount Vernon Farm which raises grass fed beef and lamb, as well as pastured pork. All raised without hormones and anti-biotics.  How cool is that?  It is a lot more expensive, but I think will be worth it.

Today is Day 1 of my 30 day plan.  Here are my initial metrics:
Weight: 331lbs
Blood Pressure: 141 / 78
Blood Sugar:  98 before breakfast (this is actually great!)

My plan is to post every day for 30 days, even if only to just briefly report my status.

Until tomorrow!!!
